McKellar

McKellar is a residential suburb of Canberra, Australia in the Belconnen district. The suburb is named after Gerald Colin McKellar, who was Chairman of Committees and Deputy President of the Senate from 1962 to 1964 and Minister for Repatriation from 1964 to 70. The suburb name was gazetted on 15 January 1974, with the streets named after journalists.

McKellar features the McKellar Oval in the centre and has panoramic prospect from Mount Ainslie to Black Mountain and Mount Majura. There is also the McKellar Pre-School, shopping centre (with a Chinese takeaway, hair salon and chiropractor), and a small football stadium and club in the north east ‘North Belconnen Soccer Club’.

McKellar has its own Neighbourhood Watch, with regular newsletters sent around to households. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) statistics regularly show low incidents of crime compared to the suburb’s surrounding regions of Evatt, Florey, Spence and Melba.
